My View of the Night Sky

Exploring Ursa Major

Filed under: Astronomy, Astrophotography, Constellations, Stars — Phil @ 8:32 am

Ursa Major is by far the most prominent target from my backyard. I decided to have another look at the Mizar-Alcor double star. I had a little more success with higher magnifications this time and got a couple of nice views. This prompted me to attempt to take some pictures using A-focal photography. I had not success at all but I will keep trying.

Another obstacle that I had working against me was my neighbor. Last night he decided to open all his curtains and turn on all his lights. Then he went to his back yard and turned on all his exterior lights. Al Gore is going to be visiting him soon I think.

Despite all of this a pressed on and pointed by telescope at Dubhe. It was rather unremarkable but I was able to see another faint star in the field of view. My main goal for viewing this star was to use it as a launching point to try and find M81 and M82. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful at finding them. I think I was doomed to fail because of Mr. Brightlights and the fact that I did not have my binoculars to help me aim (My 4 year old has hidden them somewhere in our house).

I was able to get this picture of the Big Dipper and some trees. This weekend’s forecast is for clouds and rain so I may have to wait patiently to get out again.

  1. Yeah M81 and M82 are pretty tough to find under light polluted skies.I have the same problem with my neighbors as well.Since I observe right out in the street.People that come to visit my neighbors like to leave their headlights on while they chat.Of course, the lights are always pointed at my scope, which causes my stress level to rise rapidly. Then after they leave (as I sputter under my breath)it takes about 20 minutes for my eyes to re adjust to the darkness. My scope is a goto scope making finding objects real easy.Even then however,I have to use a bit of averted vision to actually see them.
Hope the skies clear up for you soon!.

  2. Thanks Andrew,
Neighbors can make any viewing session an exercise in futility.
As for my weather it looks like the rain and clouds will be around until Thursday :(

  3. Phil – It’s good to hear that you persevered despite the light pollution from your neighbour. It’s so frustrating at times. Work and weather permitting, I love observing at around 2:00am-4:00am, it’s so peaceful – and most of the blazing security lights and house lights have been switched off by then.

I like your image of the Big Dipper, by the way – great to see a wide field image of a constellation.

  4. Thanks for the comment Jeff. I agree that the very early morning is an incredible time to observe. It is just so hard to pull myslef out of bed at that time.
